Nearly 3,000 cases of the Indian variant identified in the UK as more surge testing rolled out

The Health Secretary told MPs on Wednesday that surge testing and extra vaccine supplies were being deployed in a number of areas to control the spread of the highly transmissible strain.

Matt Hancock said 2,967 cases of the B1617.2 variant had been found, up from the 2,323 declared at the start of the week. “The race between the virus and the vaccine has got a whole lot closer,” Mr Hancock said. “In the last week across Bolton and Blackburn with Darwen, we have given 26,094 jabs as well as delivering 75,000 extra tests.” The Health
