The husband of jailed Brit Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe has said it is “completely outrageous” for Iran to use prisoners as “collateral” as part of an alleged dispute with the UK.
Richard Ratcliffe said he feared his British-Iranian wife could face a second trial when her sentence comes to an end next year amid claims the mother-of-one was being held to force the UK to settle a £400m debt.
In the 1970s, the then-shah of Iran paid the UK £400 million for 1,500 Chieftain tanks. After he was overthrown in 1979, Britain refused to deliver the tanks to the new Islamic Republic but kept the cash.
Asked about the alleged link between his wife’s detention and claims of a debt between the two countries, Mr Ratcliffe told ITV’s Good Morning Britain:
