Oldham council is one of the town halls that may have to write off thousands owed by a benefit fraudster following her death.
Christina Pomfrey, a grandmother from Runcorn, was imprisoned in 2020 after defrauding over £1m from Oldham (Greater Manchester) and Halton (Cheshire) councils as well as the Department for Work and Pensions.
Christina Pomfrey, who was 65 at the time of her conviction, stole the details of her sister, daughter-in-law and her husband’s dead first wife to steal money from the public purse.
She used an address in Oldham and addresses within Halton Borough Council’s jurisdiction, to facilitate her benefit scam. Manchester’s Minshull Street Crown Court was informed at the time that Pomfrey was claiming £13,000 a month at the peak of her fraudulent activities.
