A pensioner who has seen his rent more than double says he now feels like a "prisoner in his own home". Robert Felstead, 64, a retired train driver from Nottingham, has seen his rent soar from £350 to £750 a month over the last five years.
Robert is now 'burning through his savings', struggling to cope with the escalating costs, as his £660 a month pension no longer covers his rent.
The increase has forced him to cut back on simple pleasures such as dining out, cinema trips, or enjoying a pint at his local pub.
The retiree is now pleading for government intervention on rent caps for private landlords, and has started a petition which has since garnered 66,000 signatures from other tenants who share his frustration over spiralling rental costs.
