Fairytale of New York is probably, without doubt, one of the most famous Irish Christmas songs there is, and as a nation, we are very defensive of it.
We don’t mind people doing covers of the song, even though we know they won’t compete with the version by The Pogues and Kirsty McColl, however, when whole verses are changed, people start to have a problem.
Bon Jovi released the classic Christmas song as an EP and it has come under some criticism after he changed an entire verse of the song, and when we say criticism, people really aren’t happy.
It’s understandable that some artists want to leave out some of the more crude words but when you add in a whole other verse as Bon Jovi did, it gets a bit out of hand.
