'My £3 mystery bag from Morrisons made me feel like I was doing them a favour'

If you've been looking at ways to save money on food shopping then you may well have come across the Too Good To Go app. In short, it allows you to pick up a 'magic bag' of food that's close to its sell by and use by dates to avoid it going to waste.

You pay from around £3 for the bags and boxes, which can be collected from a variety of retailers, including corner shops, supermarkets and the likes of Greggs and Starbucks.

You have no idea what you'll get, but having reported on the haul of goodies that mum Jo Meola recently picked up from Morrisons by using the app, I decided to give it a whirl. Read more: Lidl shoppers 'nearly hit the floor' over 'disgusting' price of ham I knew I was unlikely to get as much as Jo - she got all kinds of fruit and veg in her £3.09 box - but I was quite looking forward to seeing what was inside my mystery bag, which promised at least £10 worth of food.

The app lets you search via location and I chose the closest place to me for a Morrisons pick up. At the time I didn't appreciate that it was a store attached to a petrol station in Atherton, Wigan, so when I realised that I did wonder what the selection might be.
