The mother of a Scots baby who is unable to swallow has described watching her little girl suffer as '"soul destroying". Little Avery Connell, who is just one year old, has spent her entire life in hospital after mum Seonaid Gardiner was rushed in for an emergency C-section when her placenta ruptured on February 7, 2021.

After the "traumatising" birth, parents Seonaid and Steven Connell, from Irvine, were advised to plan their daughter's funeral but the pair never gave up hope.

Avery has since been left with severe medical complications that have threatened her life numerous times. As well as being diagnosed with cerebral palsy, she has an inability to swallow and has to be suctioned numerous times a day.The uncomfortable process requires putting a tube up her nose and down her throat.

This can happen as frequent as 100 times a day or a little as five times a day.Parents Seonaid, 29, and Steven, 30, are desperate for their little girl to have a chance at life and hope to raise enough cash to take her abroad for intensive therapies that could help her swallow.Without treatment it is likely Avery will need to be suctioned for the rest of her life.Nursery manager Seonaid told the Record: "Avery has cerebral palsy and the main issue with that is it has caused an inability to swallow."Being her parent and watching what it does to her is soul destroying."We want to give her more of a life because she can't really live like this.
