Chris Willman Senior Music Writer and Chief Music Critic The MTV Video Music Awards, long seen on MTV and its sister cable outlets without a live broadcast component, will air on CBS for the first time in 2024, the network announced Thursday.

The show will air on CBS — and be “simulcast” on MTV, as the announcement puts it — from the UBS Arena on Sept. 7 at 8-11 p.m.

ET/5-8 p.m. PT, live across time zones. The special will also be available for live viewing on Paramount+. The shift is in line with other moves made by the networks recently, like the CMT Music Awards going out live for the first time on CBS in 2024 instead of CMT itself (although that special went on hiatus this year).

A one-hour pre-show will air live across Paramount Media Networks. CBS’ announcement suggested that MTV will be the only one of the Paramount networks to carry the live broadcast alongside CBS.
