A supermarket selling a key item at almost 20% more than other retailers has hit shoppers with another price hike. Asda is charging customers £2.65 for a 300g pack of chicken breasts, which is 40p (or 18%) more than Tesco, Sainsbury's, Aldi and Lidl and 24p more than Morrisons.
Yet despite it working out as the most expensive for a basket of essentials in our weekly comparison, it's now increased the price of another item - bringing the cost of a block of butter from £1.89 to £2 in the last week. Read more: Boyfriend went to Aldi for washing up liquid and returned with 'genius' plan Now its bill for the basket comes to £12.89, cementing the retailer's position as the 'most expensive' in our weekly comparison, which monitors the prices of the same eight items at the six main supermarkets, including bread, milk, butter, tea bags, coffee, beans and mince.
It's been the most expensive for eight consecutive weeks now and has been in the bottom spot frequently since the comparison first began in March 2022.
Asda isn't the only one to up the price of butter though. Lidl, which has quite often worked out the cheapest of all the supermarkets, has made the same move, increasing its butter by the same amount and bringing its overall bill to £12.34.
