More than 3,400 cases of Indian variant confirmed in UK - rise of more than 450 since yesterday

Public Health England said a total of 3,424 cases across the country are now confirmed to be of the new strain. Yesterday, Matt Hancock said the figure stood at 2,967 - that's a rise of 457 cases or 15 per cent in a day.

The new figures also show that the number of confirmed cases has risen by 2,111 in the last week. While most cases are currently concentrated in the north west, particularly in Bolton and nearby Blackburn with Darwen, PHE said it was seeing “clusters of cases” across the country.
