A morbidly obese 10-year-old schoolboy who required a heart transplant tragically died after doctors deemed him too fat for the operation, an inquest heard.
Adrian Balog was put on palliative care after two separate hospitals were unable to treat his condition due to his weight. Now, a coroner has written to the UK's Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi to warn him that obesity can be just as serious a sign child abuse as starvation.
The youngster had been morbidly overweight since he was three-years-old and hospitalised with dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition where the heart fails to pump blood around the body properly.
However, because of his obesity he did not qualify for a heart transplant or any interim measures to prepare him for surgery, Manchester Evening News reports.
