Michelle Heaton admits: 'My alcoholism meant my kids went through things no child should'

In an exclusive interview with OK! this week, Liberty X star Michelle Heaton beams with pride after having celebrated one year of sobriety.Ten years ago, following two major cancer prevention procedures - Michelle going through a premature surgical menopause at just 34 years of age.The Geordie singer plummeted into a spiral of depression, turning to both alcohol and drugs to ease the numerous medical blows she’d received.

All of this had a huge impact of her marriage to husband Hugh Hanley and on their children Faith, 10, and AJ, eight. In April last year, the now 42-year-old mum-of-two made the brave decision to check in to The Priory rehabilitation facility in a final bid to save herself and repair relationships with her family.

14 months after getting sober, an overjoyed Michelle now describes her two children as her "biggest supporters". "As children, they should never have had to go through what they did," the star admits. "But they’ve both been amazing.

We’re all each other’s biggest fans." After initially reaching out for help, Michelle said that her husband Hugh was ultimately left to raise their kids as a single parent while she was in the midst of her three year cocaine and alcohol addiction.
