Jake Albinson says he suffered cuts to his hands after vandals targeted a tram near Abraham Moss station in Cheetham Hill on Tuesday night.
The 30-year-old, from Edinburgh, was returning from visiting family when the large metal bolt was hurled through a window, narrowly missing his face.
He said: "I have never known anything like it. The noise sounded like a bomb. "I ran screaming down the tram. When I turned back I saw this item had been thrown through the glass. "I'm just really grateful it didn't hit my face.
