As the UK comes out of a record-breaking heatwave, high temperatures could return as soon as this weekend, according to the Met Office.

The heat is settling down for the rest of the week until Sunday when another period of warm weather is predicted to begin."Temperatures likely above average through the period, especially in the southeast where it may be very warm at times," said the Met Office regarding the forecast from Sunday, July 24 to Monday, August 2.

Tuesday was the country's hottest day on record. Temperatures reached a stunning 34.8C in Charterhall in the Scottish Borders, smashing the long-held record set in August 2003 of 32.9C in Greycook.

Many will be breathing a sigh of relief as the scorching heat has slipped away, but the mercury could be inching up again in a matter of days.More unseasonably hot weather is in the long-range forecast from the end of this week through early August. "We're going to hopefully see an end to this in a couple of days time but there is a remaining risk of going back up again in a week or so afterwards," said Prof Hannah Cloke, natural hazards expert at Reading University, the Mirror reported. "That's pretty concerning." Further heatwaves could hit the UK this summer and even through September. The Met Office's outlook for July, August and September states that the chance of a hot three-month period is twice as likely as normal.
