Meghan Markle has turned down an invitation to attend a swanky awards ceremony in the US following the death of The Queen. Meghan, 41, was due to be honoured at an event hosted by Variety, to celebrate the publication of its ‘Power of Women’ issue on September 28.

The Duchess of Sussex had been approached by the magazine to appear alongside other famous women including Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, as they discussed the "tropes holding women back”.

However, since the Queen’s sad death last week, the former Suits star has decided not to attend the event so that she can continue to support Prince Harry through this difficult time of grief.

A source close to the awards told the Daily Mail : "Meghan has gracefully declined to take part after the death of Queen Elizabeth.” One of the key subjects it is thought Meghan was keen to address is how stereotypes can harm women, while also highlighting the work of women’s economic empowerment groups such as Marshall Plans for Moms.
