Hot on the heels of the news that one of the most-loved couples in politics, Justin Trudeau and Sophie Gregoire were separating, all eyes have turned towards a podcast quote that took place during a chat with Meghan Markle just months before the split.

Sophie, a long time pal of Meghan, appeared on the royal’s Archetypes podcast in November 2022 where she openly talked about the expectation and burden placed on wives and mothers to hold a family together, even declaring that they carry “most of the load” in the household.The Canadian mother-of-three was well versed in the “crushing the guilt of expectations” set upon mothers and women in general, the Duchess of Sussex claimed in her introduction before their frank discussion got underway.

During their chat, both women used the parallels of women and lionesses to echo their thoughts on reclaiming “freedom”, with Meghan in particular citing a quote by Shefali Tsabary about a woman, like a brave lioness, who shed all expectations to live authentically. “She drops the role of saviour, knowing she can only save herself,” explained Meghan.
