Two of the Royal Air Force’s most senior roles have been held in recent years by men from Kilmarnock. Sir Stephen Hillier and Sir Stuart Atha ascended the ranks of the RAF with the pair being knighted for their services.The officers were in the same year group at Kilmarnock Academy and both ended their careers at the most senior leadership level of the air force.The pair’s former head teacher Frank Donnelly has told the Kilmarnock Standard they can be an inspiration to young people throughout Kilmarnock and the Irvine Valley.Stephen and Stuart have been recognised to such an extent that they have streets named after them in Kilmarnock (Hillier Road and Atha Wynd).From a very early age, Stephen was determined to follow in the footsteps of
