Maya Jama has admitted that she "statistically should have gone off the rails" after her boyfriend was shot dead outside a pub when she was 16.
The former Radio 1 presenter, 25, said her career was what saved her from going into a downward spiral as she had something to look forward to following the tragedy.
Speaking to Cosmopolitan about her past, Maya admitted the experience of losing someone so close to her has made her "fearless".
She said: “When I was 16 I went through a lot. With my boyfriend passing, it gave me a fearless approach to things. I felt like life was really short." She continued: “Out of everything that [has] happened in my life, that was a reality check on a massive scale.
