The BRIT Awards is landing on ITV1, as the biggest stars on the British music scene descend on the O2 in the hope of taking home a glorious gong.
But for Love Island ’s Maya Jama, it’s an honour just to be on stage hosting. “It’s been a dream since I was a teenager, so I’m super over the moon,” she smiles. “The BRITs was the last goal that I had to tick off my 19-year-old’s list for presenting.
Gonna have to come up with new goals!” She’ll be joined by Radio 1 DJ Clara Amfo and presenter Roman Kemp, who admits that he became emotional when asked to host. “When they told me, I cried,” says Roman, who recently quit his job at Capital FM. “The BRITs has always been on this pedestal for me, because in terms of excitement in the UK there is nothing like it.” The presenting trio have their work cut out however, with Roman revealing that he turned to Ant and Dec for advice. “They said it was the hardest show they’d ever had to do.
But there’s a masochist side to me that really wants to experience that,” he laughs. “That’s what it’s about; putting your head above the parapet sometimes and if it scares you, that’s good.” This year will see the likes of Dua Lipa, Blur, Calvin Harris, Taylor Swift and Maya’s boyfriend Stormzy fight for awards in their categories, while Kylie Minogue, RAYE and Becky Hill are set to perform.
