Mastermind is heading for a makeover after veteran presenter John Humphrys announced he is stepping down. The 77-year-old revealed he would be leaving the role in March after 18 years at the helm.
And writing about his decision in his Daily Mail column he raised the possibility his replacement might be a woman. ‘Now, after more than 750 shows, it really is time to finish,’ he said making a play on the show’s famous catchphrase.
Having been in the hot seat since 2003 he said it would not be easy for his successor to put their stamp on the show as Mastermind was a format you tinkered with “at your peril”.
The show is famous for its black leather chair, in which the contestant sits, and ominous theme tune, aptly titled Approaching Menace.
