Households are being urged to one thing this month to avoid overpaying on their energy bills. Ahead of the Ofgem energy price cap which is set to lower from October 1, all energy customers in Scotland have 24 days to submit their prepayment meter readings by September 30, Birmingham Live reports.

By informing your energy provider of gas and electric readings, homes reduce their chances of bills being over estimated.Only homes with prepayment meters need to submit readings manually.

Households fitted with smart meters do not need to do anything as they feature a smart mode which will automatically submit readings to suppliers.Explaining meter readings back in June, money expert Martin Lewis tweeted: “With monthly direct debit, firms estimate your usage, and assign it to a certain period, so submitting a reading within a few days of the change (many let you backdate a few days, too) reduces the risk of their ‘estimating’ going against you (though there’s always a chance a discrepancy could end up in your favour). He continued: “Take a pic of the meter for belt ’n’ braces.

The easiest way is to take a picture of your meters, so you have the readings to hand. Then you can log in to your online account or to a web form on your provider's site to enter in the readings."The level of the energy price cap is based on typical household energy use and reflects recent falls in wholesale energy prices. The energy price cap has dropped below £2,000 a year for the first time in 18 months.
