Martin Compston wants to make his favourite book by a Scots author into a movie

Martin Compston has revealed he wants to make his favourite book by Scots author John Niven into a movie.The Line of Duty star said he has always wanted to see Niven’s novel The Amateurs converted to the screen.The Amateurs, which was published in 2009, tells the story of Gary Irvine and his hapless brother Lee alongside tales of infidelity, drug dealing, contract killing and golf.Compston, 39, who splits his time between his hometown of Greenock and Las Vegas with wife Tianna, said he knew that the book should be on the screen as soon as he finished reading it.Speaking on his Restless Natives podcast, he said: “The Amateurs is one of my favourite books.“I approached John a long time ago and said ‘this needs to be on screen.’“I’m desperate to make it into a film, we’ve talked about a film and a TV series.”Niven, 55, who was born in Irvine, Ayrshire, was appearing on Compston’s podcast to promote his memoir, ‘O Brother’, which tells the story of his younger brother Gary who in 2010 took his own life at age 42.The former Sunday Mail columnist’s breakthrough novel Kill Your Friends, which is based on his career in the music industry, was published in 2008 was described by Word magazine as “possibly the best British novel since Trainspotting”.
