Maren Morris confirmed that she’s taking a step back from country music during an interview with the Los Angeles Times.
With the unveiling of her new EP The Bridge, the 33-year-old hitmaker strongly implied that she was taking a break from the genre after calling out what she described as “rot” within it.
She made her feelings more clear during her conversation with the outlet. “If you truly love this type of music and you start to see problems arise, it needs to be criticized.
Anything this popular should be scrutinized if we want to see progress,” she said, adding that she’d “kind of said everything I can say.” Saying that the genre was “burning itself down without my help,” Maren made it clear that she was distancing herself, saying, “I always thought I’d have to do middle fingers in the air jumping out of an airplane, but I’m trying to mature here and realize I can just walk away from the parts of this that no longer make me happy.” Elsewhere, Maren touched on pressure to perform in the genre as a woman.
