Alex Iwobi netted a 97th-minute winner for the Cottagers, securing them their first victory over the Reds since 2009, just minutes after Harry Maguire thought he had earned the hosts a point.
The England defender had brought United level in the final minute of regulation time following Calvin Bassey's 65th-minute opener.
United were second best from the first whistle, failing to get into any sort of stride.
