Rashford was brought on in the 119th minute of the game specifically to take a penalty in the shootout but the 23-year-old dragged his spot-kick onto the post and England went on to lose the shootout 3-2 to Italy after Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka missed too.
All three players were targeted over the following 24 hours, which led to an outpouring of support from fans and media for all three as well as players coming out in defence of them.
