The Premier League has confirmed clubs will be allowed to make five substitutions from next season. Clubs were permitted to make five changes for the remainder of the 2019-20 season after its restart following a three-month shutdown due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but the majority of clubs voted to revert to the three-subs rule at the start of last season.

However, the Premier League confirmed the permanent rule change to five substitutions from the start of the 2022-23 season. The rule is already in place in the other four major leagues in Europe.
