Former Manchester United star Terrence Young has passed away at the age of 71, the football club have confirmed.Terrence, who went by the name of Tony, made 97 appearances for the club between 1969 and 1976, and was part of the team that earned promotion back to the first division in 1973-74 as part of Tommy Docherty’s squad.Tony eventually left the club in 1976 for Charlton Athletic.
He went on to also represent York City, where he linked up with former United boss Wilf McGuinness. Paying tribute to the star, Manchester United posted: “Manchester United is saddened by the news that our former player Terrence ‘Tony’ Young has passed away." Former Red Devils player Sammy McIlroy paid a heartfelt tribute: “It’s terribly sad to hear of his passing.
I remember Tony had a massive reputation as a winger when he first joined the club, and unlike some, he seemed to thrive under the pressure,” he said. “He was a proper Manchester lad – hard!
He trained the way he played as well. “Tony was a quiet personality, really. He broke in as a right-winger but showed his versatility and team ethic when he played a few games at right-back.Tony was the sort of character every group of players need, and the sort of willing player every manager loves.” Manchester United concluded their statement by saying: “Our thoughts are with Tony’s family and friends at this difficult time.” Tony was indeed a “Manchester lad” born in Urmston, just a few miles from Old Trafford.
