Phelan first assisted Sir Alex Ferguson from 2008-2013, leaving when Ferguson retired. Brief stints as a manager himself, first of all with Norwich as a caretaker in 2015 and then again with Hull City in 2016 failed to yield success.
Jose Mourinho’s sacking at United in 2019 saw the club hire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on a temporary basis, with Phelan arriving at the same time as a first-team coach.
