A Manchester school will become an 'attendance hub' in a bid to help tackle pupil absence across the region. Wright Robinson College, in Gorton, will be one of 18 new 'attendance hubs' installed across six regions in the UK, the government has said today.

It is one of two in the North West, alongside The Beacon Church of England Primary School in Liverpool. The government says the hubs will be run by schools with 'excellent' attendance and will provide assistance to other schools across England that need to boost their attendance.

It says some proposed ways this will be done is through 'direct pupil engagement initiatives' including breakfast clubs and extracurricular activities.

One-to-one support will also be provided to pupils who are frequently absent while working with their families to find out why they're skipping school, which the government say can lead to extra support, more intensive work with teachers, or 'bridge-building' between schools and families.
