Crystal Palace upset the odds to win 3-1 and sink Manchester United to defeat in their opening game of the season. Andros Townsend opened the scoring in the seventh minute by firing home at the back post from Jeffrey Schlupp’s cross.
The Eagles then saw a goal ruled out for offside but doubled their lead in the second half as Wilfried Zaha converted a penalty.
The incident was not without controversy: Jordan Ayew’s VAR-awarded spot kick was saved - but goalkeeper David de Gea was found to be off his line and the penalty was retaken and Zaha made no mistake.
With 10 minutes remaining, Donny van de Beek reacted quickest to a loose ball in the box to score on his debut and halve the deficit.
