Man suspected of murdering wife died after suffering 'brain damage' in prison

A man alleged to have murdered his wife died after suffering 'catastrophic brain damage' while in prison, an inquest has heard.

The court was told that Jai Singh Puni, 50, had been detained in police custody after being charged with killing his wife Sukhjeet Uppal, 40, who was repeatedly stabbed at their home on September 19, 2021.

Opening an inquest at Birmingham Coroner's Court into the prisoner's death, coroner Miss Emma Brown said that the former HGV driver died in custody, as reported by Birmingham Live.

Singh, who was born in India, was pronounced dead at Birmingham City Hospital on January 28. West Midlands Police said that there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.A post-mortem examination of his body found Singh had brain damage, multiple organ failure and suffered a cardiac arrest due to asphyxia.The court heard he was in detention at HMP Birmingham at the time of his death.Investigations into the events leading to Singh's death are ongoingThe final inquest hearing adjourned to Monday, February 27, 2023.Closing the hearing, the coroner offered her condolences to his family.West Midlands Police has said no other suspects were being investigated over Sukhjeet's death.Sukhjeet’s family paid tribute to her as she was named last year, saying: “Our beautiful, kind-hearted sister was one of the most caring and loving people you could ever meet.
