Man killed in house fire as police tape off road and forensics investigate

A man has died following a fire at a house in Wigan. Firefighters were called to the blaze in Newstead Road, Goose Green, at about 4am today (Saturday, July 23).

A man was pronounced dead at the scene, police have confirmed. His age and the cause of the fire have not yet been revealed.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing up to eight emergency service vehicles descend on the scene as 'black smoke billowed from a house'.

Following the incident, the residential street remained taped off throughout the morning.
