A man has been fined £6,000 for breaching lockdown after sneaking out to get a haircut. Gareth Le Monnier, 37, was so desperate for a trim he flouted self-isolation rules to visit Toni & Guy when he arrived on the Channel Island of Guernsey.

The 37-year-old, who will not be allowed out of jail until he pays the fine, was slammed by a judge, who told him that understanding the rules was "not rocket science." Le Monnier had travelled from his home in Jersey on the Channel Chieftan to see his wife on Friday, July 3, and was subject to a mandatory 14 day self isolation.

Customs officers told him on arrival he was bound under the Emergency Powers Law to self isolate until one minute past midnight on Friday 17 July.
