Mateo Kovacic will be out for up to a month after the Manchester City midfielder picked up an injury while away on international duty with Croatia.

The loss of the 30-year-old is another hammer blow to Pep Guardiola on the injury front this season and compounds selection issues in the centre of the pitch with Rodri out for the season.

Kovacic has started seven of the last 10 games for City but he could now miss eight games in the run up to Christmas. While Kovacic's injury provides City with a problem in midfield, Guardiola's selection dilemma in defence is easing, with John Stones, Manuel Akanji and Nathan Ake all returning to training this week.
