A man has been charged after allegedly carrying a weapon in Bolton town centre. Officers were called to Hotel Street on Wednesday afternoon (August 17) to reports of a man possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

William Steele, 36, of Bentley Street, was tackled to the ground, arrested and taken into custody for questioning. He was later charged with possessing an offensive weapon without lawful authority or reasonable excuse.

Police were keen to urge the incident was not in relation to the demonstration in the town centre, where protestors stormed the town hall in anger over a drag queen show for children and families. Officers responded quickly to the reports and arrested a 36-year-old man for ‘possessing an offensive weapon in a public place’ and was taken into custody for further enquiries. "William Steele (20/02/1986) of Bentley Street, Bolton was charged with ‘possessing an offensive weapon without lawful authority or reasonable excuse’.
