The woman, in her 70s, received a phone call from a man on Tuesday (December 15).He told her there was counterfeit money in her bank account and that she needed to withdraw £7,300.
The caller said he would collect the money from her home, in Calder Road, Bolton, later that evening. The 'terrified' victim decided to confide in a neighbour who then reported the suspicious call to police.
Officers attended shortly after 5.30pm and intercepted a man believed to be visiting the woman's home to collect the money. A 33-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of attempted fraud; and possession of cannabis.
He was found to be in possession of £10,000 in cash and a number of mobile phones. He remains in custody for questioning. Enquiries are ongoing,.
