A man is accused of causing the death of the passenger on a motorcycle.Gavin Aitken, 49, allegedly ploughed into Liam Scott, 21, and Stewart McKenzie, 23, as they rode on the A82, East Dunbartonshire, on August 31, 2020.Court papers state Aitken, of Alexandria, was driving a Volkswagen Golf while repeatedly interacting with his mobile phone. It is claimed he failed to maintain proper observations of the road ahead and react appropriately to the presence of other road users. The charge states Aitken failed to notice the black Suzuki motorbike ridden by Mr McKenzie while Mr Scott, of Kilwinning was his pillion passenger. The allegations claim Mr McKenzie slowed to make a right turn at a junction which leads to Auchenheglish Lodges in Balloch. It is stated that Aitken caused his car to collide with the motorbike causing extensive damage to both vehicles. The charge goes on to say that serious injury was caused to Mr McKenzie and Mr Scott was so severely injured that he died two days later at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow.Aitken pled not guilty today at the High Court in Glasgow to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving.A trial was fixed for June next year by Judge Lord Fairley.Don't miss the latest Ayrshire headlines –sign up to our free daily newsletter here
