'Make it make sense': The Deansgate 'shambles' and what the council say is the masterplan

Ask business owners, city centre residents or motorists what they think of the ongoing roadworks to transform Deansgate in Manchester and the same words come up time and time again. "Chaos", "baffling", and "Absolute shambles" being among the most frequently used when commenting to the MEN.

The once busy thoroughfare through Manchester has been turned into an entirely one way route for traffic on one side of Deansgate down to Liverpool Road.

The other side is sectioned off by rows of street furniture, and carved into one of the largest cycle lanes in the city centre.

The latest works have seen further lane closures for the past fortnight, at the lower end of Deansgate at the junction with Whitworth Street West and Chester Road, while the Bridgewater Viaduct footway is remodelled.
