A man and woman arrested as police investigate the death of a baby girl in Oldham have been bailed. Greater Manchester Police have stressed detectives are not treating the case 'as a murder or homicide investigation'.

The force said on Tuesday (February 12) a man in his 40s and a woman in her 20s had been bailed. They were detained on suspicion of neglect after a baby girl was found dead on Sunday (February 9).

Police and paramedics were called to Nelson Way in Chadderton following reports 'concerning the welfare of a baby'. The infant, understood to be five-weeks-old, was pronounced dead following the call at around 12.56pm.

The man and woman have now been bailed pending further investigation. Detective Superintendent Matthew Walker from GMP's Oldham district said: "We have taken the decision to bail the two arrested individuals while we continue our investigations into how this young baby died. "Getting answers for this baby and her loved ones is paramount and that is at the heart of everything we do.
