Major Ayr road reopens in full following Station Hotel blaze as town gets Christmas boost

Ayr has been given an early Christmas present as Station Bridge Road reopened today for the first time in almost three months.The key route into the town has been cut off since September 25 when a devastating blaze ripped through the neighbouring Station Hotel.The inferno plunged the top end of the town into chaos with Station Bridge Road immediately shut as safety works were carried out on the crumbling relic.Demolition crews have pulled down the gable end which towered over the landmark road connecting the town to allow all four lanes to reopen.It spells the end of misery for the road which has been hammered by closures throughout recent years.

It is also the first time in a number of years that all four lanes of the road have been open to traffic.Business will be set to rejoice after being left cut off due to the road being shut with footfall being at an all time low.South Ayrshire Council announced today that the road was back in action.

A Council spokesperson said: "We can confirm that all four lanes have now reopened at Station Bridge Road to allow traffic to cross to and from Ayr Town Centre."We’ll continue to keep you updated on the safety works at the former Station Hotel building as more information becomes available."
