The body of a man was found on a bridge over the M61. Police say there are no suspicious circumstances. The discovery was made near Chorley and triggered a huge emergency response.
It saw the motorway shut in both directions for several hours. Police received a call at about 11.30am today (October 15) to reports of a sudden death.
The M61 was subsequently closed in both directions between junctions 8 and 6. On arrival, officers found the body of a man. His death is not being treated as suspicious and a file is being prepared for the coroner.
The incident caused major tailbacks throughout this afternoon but the motorway has since reopened. A spokesperson for the Lancashire police said: "We were called at around 11.30am today (Sunday, October 15) to a bridge over the M61 close to Rivington, to reports of a sudden death.
