Former neonatal nurse Lucy Letby was caught ‘virtually red-handed’ by a doctor as she displaced the breathing tube of a premature baby girl, prosecutors allege.

Letby, 34, is accused of a single offence of the attempted murder of a baby girl, known as Child K, on February 17 2016. In August last year she was convicted of the murder of seven ‘very young’ babies and the attempted murder of six others, whilst she worked as a neonatal nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital. Lucy Letby retrial updates as former nurse accused of attempted murder of baby girl - RECAP Jurors were unable to reach verdicts on a count of attempted murder and Letby is now facing a retrial at Manchester Crown Court.

Opening the case to the jury, prosecutor Nick Johnson KC said that her previous convictions and her status as a ‘multiple murderer’ is an important piece of evidence when jurors consider whether she was ‘trying to kill’ Child K.

Before February 17 2016, Mr Johnson said Letby had already murdered five children and attempted to murder three others – including two attempts on one baby girl – on various dates between June 2015 and October 2015.
