Almost eight years ago today, Anthony Martial ripped Liverpool to shreds and became an instant Old Trafford hero. A hefty £58million fee for a 19-year-old with just 15 senior goals to his name had raised eyebrows.

These days, stumping up that amount for a relatively unknown youngster is the norm but Martial arrived at Manchester United with a weight on his back.

Then manager Louis van Gaal played down the price tag, insisting the Frenchman was one for the future. He said: "United are routinely quoted £10million more for a player but I have not bought Martial for me.

I have bought him for the next manager of Manchester United." Well, four managers, eight years and a loan spell abroad later, United appear no closer to gaining a return on their investment.
