It has been five years since Louis van Gaal was dismissed as Manchester United boss in the wake of his side winning the FA Cup trophy.
The Dutchman guided his side to the 2016 cup triumph - the first trophy for the club since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement three years earlier - but it was not enough to save his job.
Van Gaal was dismissed by United in the aftermath of that triumph as he was replaced days later by Jose Mourinho, who had been sacked as Chelsea boss five months prior.
Despite the cup success, it was a disappointing league campaign under van Gaal with the side missing out on a top four finish and failing to qualify for the Champions League the following year.
