Joseph Allen Maldonado-Passage (born March 5, 1963), better known by his stage name Joe Exotic, is an American former zoo operator, internet personality, musician, and convicted felon. The former owner and operator of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park (a.k.a. G. W. Zoo) in Wynnewood, Oklahoma, Maldonado-Passage had claimed to be the most prolific breeder of tigers in the United States. He twice unsuccessfully ran for public office, first for President of the United States in 2016 as an independent, and then for Governor of Oklahoma in 2018 as a Libertarian.

Louis Theroux slams Tiger King for not focusing more on animal rights issues

Louis Theroux has criticised the Netflix series Tiger King after being one of the first to interview its star Joe Exotic. The documentary maker, 49, said the show should have focused more on animal rights than the craziness surrounding Joe and the other big cat zookeepers in the US.

He interviewed Joe - whose real name is Joseph Maldonado-Passage - back in 2011 for his BBC show America’s Most Dangerous Pets.

Speaking on the Radio 2 Breakfast Show with Zoe Ball on Wednesday, Louis said that while he did enjoy the show, he thought there should have been more background to the poor treatment of the tigers.
