A man who scooped a staggering $22million (£17.6m) lottery win chose to keep his family in the dark, fearing they might struggle to cope with his sudden wealth.

The newly minted millionaire called into the US-based Ramsey Show, hosted by Dave Ramsey, and revealed that only his wife and one sibling are privy to his massive windfall from a multi-state lottery.

John, the winner, expressed his reluctance to share the news with his teenage children, concerned they might eagerly anticipate his demise to inherit his fortune.

He stated: "The first thing I did when I found out I'd won was research. You read one in five people lose their lottery winnings or go bankrupt in 10 years. "One of the things it said was you tell too many people and you get too many people at your door asking for handouts and expecting you to pay for everything.
