Lockerbie couple climb Criffel after cancelling holiday due to air traffic control meltdown

A young Lockerbie couple cancelled their holiday to Rhodes – and climbed Criffel instead. Aidan Kevans and Jess Cameron, both aged 20, made the decision after arriving at Edinburgh airport last Monday to find there had been an air traffic control meltdown.

Tens of thousands of UK travellers were trapped overseas after the UK’s air traffic control system failed due to a technical fault on one of the busiest days of the year for flights.

Planes due to depart were initially put on hold but flights were eventually cancelled when the scale of the problem became apparent.

Aidan said: “Jess and I set out on Monday morning to jet off to Theologos, Rhodes. “Shortly after arriving at the airport we’d heard the news that all UK flights were grounded. “Hopeful that it would pass, we wined and dined as everyone else in the airport did. “The place was swarmed with uncertainty.
