Alan Arkin, an Oscar-winning actor for “Little Miss Sunshine” with a body of work that spans seven decades of stage and screen acting, died June 29 at his home in Carlsbad, Calif. He was 89. Arkin’s sons Adam, Matthew and Anthony confirmed his death in a joint statement to People, writing, “Our father was a uniquely talented force of nature, both as an artist and a man. A loving husband, father, grand and great grandfather, he was adored and will be deeply missed.”Arkin, who was known for projecting a characteristically dry wit but could play tragedy with equal efficacy, won his Oscar for his supporting performance in the indie comedy “Little Miss Sunshine” in 2007; he scored an encore nomination for his punchy and profane turn in Ben Affleck’s best picture winner “Argo.” Arkin picked up two earlier nominations in his film career, for “The Russians Are Coming, the Russians Are Coming” in 1967 and for “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter” in 1969.

Pat Saperstein Deputy Editor Rolly Crump, the Disney animator who went on to help create the look of early Disneyland attractions like It’s a Small World and the Enchanted Tiki Room, died Sunday in Carlsbad, Calif. He was 93. The Facebook page for his autobiography announced his death. Crump didn’t have a formal art education, but his amateur drawings helped him get a job at Walt Disney Co. when he was just 22, working on films including “Peter Pan,” “Lady and the Tramp,” “Sleeping Beauty” and “101 Dalmations,” mostly as an animation assistant. Crump was known for his eccentric beatnik style and pop art approach, which was evident in his personal art projects such as a series of posters celebrating drugs. He created posters for rock groups and jazz artists, and his artwork drew the attention of Walt Disney, who moved him from the animation department to designing for Disneyland. Crump joined the fledgling Walt Disney Imagineering Department in 1959, contributing to designs for attractions including the Haunted Mansion, It’s a Small World, Tomorrowland and the Enchanted Tiki Room.

California police were continuing to hunt for a 68-year-old woman's killer as nearly 100 people gathered for a walk on the popular hiking trail where she was attacked in broad daylight and stabbed to death. The walk was held Saturday in Carlsbad’s Hosp Grove Park to remember Lisa Thorborg, who had moved to the beach city near San Diego six months ago from Oregon and to comfort a community shaken by the death.
