Livingston boss David Martindale heaped praise on his side's defensive efforts as they were able to hold Aberdeen to not even a single shot on target in their opening day 0-0 draw at the Tony Macaroni Arena. The gaffer's team selection certainly raised a few eyebrows with influential duo Bruce Anderson and Stephen Kelly relegated to the bench but the Lions produced a high energy, 100 per cent effort display that typified their early years in the top flight - but was sorely lacking last term.Martindale admitted he went into the contest hoping to match up against the Dons and it worked a treat.

He said: "Today there was four or five players who were disappointed they didn't start but I knew what type of game it was going to be and I had to stand up to that and I thought we did it magnificently well."I thought the players all over the park were brilliant.

We set up in a way that I felt would match up really well. They like to press high and set plays are big - they've got great delivery and Leighton Clarkson makes them click but I thought we nullified them."The most important thing was getting in with a clean sheet.

From February onwards we were naive, weak and got bullied and that's not something that's going to happen this year. It reminded me of the days of Gallagher, Halkett and Lithgow.
