Lisa Nandy has praised local and regional journalists for 'busting myths' during the riots that broke out across the UK earlier this year.
The Culture Secretary vowed to protect 'fearless and truthful journalism' as she commended reporters for 'telling the story of the community response' as disorder broke out across the country.
Ms Nandy said local journalists were crucial in providing information the public could trust as rioters took to the streets after three young girls were stabbed to death in Southport.
Speaking at the News Media Association’s Journalism Matters parliamentary reception last night (October 29), the Wigan MP said: "While national media understandably focused on the violent thugs who caused havoc in our towns, local and regional media were often first on the scene busting myths and telling the story of the community response.
